Closing off the summer with a mix from the up-and-coming Milanese project Bianco Negativo. Claudio and Davide have been building their discography over the last year with releases on labels such as their own Marguerite Records and Warsaw-based Syntetyk. Musically, the duo lies somewhere on the border between dark synth-wave and EBM, but their second label, Tocca Il Futuro, showcases their affinity for the eclectic. You can get a taste of their musical selection on our Endless Illusion mix as well as their regular Rinse FM and LYL Radio residencies.
Hello Claudio, hello Davide. Where am I sending my hellos to, where are you guys?
Claudio: Hi Jonas 🙂 Now we are in Puglia, but we live in Milan. We were born here!
Davide: Yes in Apulia, south Italy. I’ve been living in Milan since 2014.
Claudio: I moved in 2019!
What do you do in Milan?
Davide: I’m studying sound design at IED.
Claudio: I’m working as a sales account. We usually go back to our families in Puglia during the holidays
What does your holiday in Puglia look like? Beaches and family time?
D: Yes, it was nice! A little relaxation with family 🙂.
And when you’re back in the city?
D: We spend most of our time in our recording studio, experimenting with new techniques, reading books, watching movies and listening to all kinds of music from electronic to rock, jazz to noise, etc.
Are you working on anything particular at the moment? Any new releases coming up?
D: We are working on a couple of remixes (one of them coming soon on Marguerite Records) for this year. The goal for next year will be to work on two ep!
What kind of new techniques have you experimented with?
D: We are experimenting with microphone techniques, to record sounds made through speaker systems using Max's programmes.
So you make a sound in software and then you record it with a microphone through speakers? What are you hoping to achieve, or what does it sound like?
D: The result is a surprise, we are mainly interested in having a special harmonic distortion that we achieve by reamping the signal with effects. We use 2 mics so we can catch how the room sounds.
How are things with your Marguerite Records label? When did you start the label and was the general idea/concept behind it? I am curious about the name, where does it come from?
D: Marguerite is doing very well, we are pleased and proud of our hard work. Marguerite was born in 2015, the goal is to support independent artists of the electronic music scene and create a network between them: a kind of a community. The name comes from my hometown called Margherita di Savoia, known for the biggest salt pans in Europe. In the 2019 Claudio has started to collaborate on Marguerite and Tocca il futuro.
You also run a second label – Tocca il futuro – with which you took a more experimental approach, away from the dancefloor. What is the idea there? How do Marguerite and Tocca il futuro differ from each other? And do they have anything in common, do they share anything music-wise?
D: Yes, Tocca il futuro is our second independent record label. The concept is similar to Marguerite: traveling in the same direction but on different tracks. It focuses on "listening music" by crossing musical genres such as electroacoustic, ambient, experimental, etc.
Born in 2017, the first release was dedicated to the passing of three dear friends. One of them, Cosimo aka F.A.P., with whom I’ve spent part of my childhood, producing music together. The name 'Tocca il futuro' comes from his track 'Future' and 'Tocca' stands for 'to touch' something that will come from the reality that he is in now. I remember very well that day, when he made me listen to his first version of it.
It's a very beautiful idea, that you release music about the future, made by a friend who passed away and made the music a long time ago, and you reconnect with him in the present, which is the future he might have had in mind.
Can you tell us something about the other two releases, 'Realtà Invertita' and 'Anima respinta dal futuro'? How do they relate to the future?
D: Realtà invertita is the second release from Tocca il futuro. For Raw MT the title represents a temporal dimension linked to the present, understood as suspended time: everything is still and has no future. A minimal imagery where notes suspended in the air move slowly.
‘Anima respinta dal futuro vol.1' is TIF's first compilation.
The listener's experience is at first guided by elements of field recordings that lead him to the discovery of a tangible reality; at a second moment this same reality becomes rarefied, similar to drowsiness but still perceptible: the future. Upon awakening from this journey, the listener will be "pushed back" to return to the tangible, conscious world.
Do you believe in the future? Are you optimistic about the future of the world?
Yes, we believe in the future! As long as art exists, the future is worth living for.
