We didn't have to go too far for our June guest mix, delivered by Prague's very own Marie Pravda. This young DJ has become an integral part of local lineups over the last few years and has appeared on several well-established guest mix series. In her selections, she emphasizes consistency and the listener’s well-being, as she says, she always wants to convey some emotion in her mixes. Recently, she’s become a resident of the new local initiative Planeta Za and the European collaborative project Gravity Network. She’s also started devoting herself to her own music production, and we can only look forward to what she has in store for the future.
Čus Marie, how are you, where are you and what are you up to today?
Ahoj, I’m pretty well, right now I'm in my room and waiting for your next question :). Besides that I have to work on some more podcasts which I need to finish by the end of June. Each of them is narrated in a different way so I need to dig a lot of music. Also I should really take care of my plants, they are a bit sad.
Show me your sad plants please.
For example this one needs to be replanted to bigger space. But I’m out of my place most of the time, poor baby , but I promise I will find the time to do that !
Which podcasts are you working on? What are those different narratives and what do you mean by narrated when talking about a DJ set?
I'm kind of finished with this one (Endless Illusion mix series), then I promised to do one for Gravity and also Metamorphosen podcast, which is supposed to be really off dancefloor and rather experimental. So the podcasts are different in style, and as I don't want to deliver just whatever, but something meaningful, it takes a lot of time.
Also I was doing podcasts not just to share great tracks I found, but also putting them together and creating a story was kind of therapy for me. But recently, and also thanks to corona lockdown, I became sort of a happier person, and I'm not very sure how to work with "happy" emotions through my music yet. If that makes sense :).
Yeah, you seemed rather more positive lately, usually smiling. How did that happen? What made you go for less 'happy' emotions in music in the first place? When listening to your sets, I've usually felt like it's kind of angry.
Well that would need a very long and complex answer, so to make a long story short I stopped punishing myself with toxic stuff in my life, rather focusing more on what I want to do in my life and what is important. I still can enjoy very deep melancholic music, but now I know that I don't have to drown in it.
Btw thanks for the picture 😀.
Oh, and I have more actually...
Now when I listen to your sets from your 'TRIP' playlist on Soundcloud, I can actually hear how therapeutically they work. It's easy to get lost in listening. You create a very strong 'alternate' reality with them and I am wondering how?
What do you look for in a track when you're digging, for these kinds of sets, but also in general? What is it that makes you get the track into your collection?
Ahaha that's great, those photos are basically the answer for your question. I'm looking for sounds which are mind blowing and the whole track makes me feel or re-feel something. I would say that for me each track is like a word and the set is the whole sentence. It just depends on what kind of language I want to use at a particular moment.
So a track can mean many different things, depending on the language – the context?
Yes I think it's like in spoken language. Words can have different meanings, it just depends on how you use them.
I totally agree. Can you pick one track from your set (Endless Illusion) and try to explain what you think it is saying?
I feel that I narrated this set in a very calm way (although there is a pinch of dark sounds in each track but that is my esthetics) and in the middle I used this track called Liquid Version, which sounds like paranoias I sometimes get when things are too good to be true. But as I deal with it in my real life, I get it resolved in my mix as well 🙂
The whole point is reconciliation.
Wow, that feels very accurate. Now I wonder if I felt the same without you telling me it's about paranoia. But I guess that's the beauty of it, everyone is welcome to feel about it however they like, but you as a DJ can nudge them in your direction.
Agree. Also I have been said many times that my mixes are hard to listen. Because they really need to be listened to from beginning till the end to have the full experience. For some people podcasts are just some random stuff on soundcloud, but I believe that it's a certain artform.
No skipping!
So now that you are more happy, what are your plans for the near future? Recently you have joined the Harmless Youth label.
I recently started to learn how to do my own production but that's something which is gonna take some time until I will actually have something to put out. For now it's just fun with knobs and beeps.
I'm actually super happy about getting this chance in Harmless Youth. What I do is searching for artists whose music we can release, so I’m sort of an artistic director. Hopefully, in autumn there will be a vinyl release of Will Flisk. Very very talented man and his music is so beautiful. It's like wandering between inner thoughts. Very slow dancefloor tracks which blow my mind.
How do you approach artist selection for the label? You must be finding a lot of new ones everyday. Is the identity of Harmless Youth a limit for you, or are you able to shape and develop it yourself?
I like artists who are kind of flexible in the music they do. Flexible in a way that you can have a record which makes sense as the whole thing, but you can also take tracks and use them in different occasions, or play them at the party
The identity of the label is slightly changing naturally as we are growing as personalities. Jakub became my very good friend and we are learning from each other on a personal and musical level. I think that being flexible without losing your personality is the most important for dealing with the world and life.
